There’s no beating the freedom of driving oneself around Kruger. However, to deepen one’s experience of the bush, the visitor should take advantage of the guided game drives offered by most of the camps in Kruger Park. The best option is to go for the early morning or evening drives.
Firstly, there is a chance to experience the Kruger bush in a way that is completely different to what happens during daylight hours, and secondly one has a guide on hand to explain what is happening and to answer any questions.
Most of the predators hunt during twilight or night-time, and one will also see many of the smaller carnivores – such as Civet or Genet – that one would not normally see by day. The sound of the bush is different at night which is both a time of danger and respite.
Early Morning Game Drive (3-4 hours)
Early morning drives leave at around 04h30 in summer and 05h30 in winter. Tour departure time must be confirmed with reception when you book in to your accommodation. Accommodation must be booked for the previous night at the camp, as walks/drives leave before the gates open officially.
Mid Morning Game Drive (2 hours)
The shorter 2-hour mid-morning game drive in Kruger National Park departs at 09h00.
Sunset Game Drive (3 - 4 hours)
Sunset drives leave 2 hours before gate closing time. In summer this is around 16h30 and in winter, around 15h30. You must be checked into your accommodation at least 30 minutes prior to departure and confirm departure time with reception as you check in.
Late Night Game Drive (2 hours)
Late night drives leave 2 hours after gate closing time. You must confirm departure time with reception as you check into your accommodation. Armed with spotlights, the guides identify elements in the environment and seek to find the elusive nocturnal wildlife.
